The cell body contains the nucleus, which controls the cell’s functions. The axon is a long, thin fiber that sends messages to other neurons, while dendrites receive messages from other neurons.
The nervous system is able to regulate itself using feedback mechanisms. Feedback mechanisms work like a thermostat in a house, continually checking the body’s state and making adjustments to keep it at a set point. For example, if the body’s temperature gets too high, the feedback mechanism signals the sweat glands to produce more sweat, which cools the body down.
