Language Processing Disorder (LPD) is a disorder which involves difficulties with language like :
- Recognizing
- Receiving
- Understanding
- Expressing
People with LPD usually struggle to get or understand a joke for example.
SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR TO TRACK LPD:
IN CHILDREN:
- Lack of smiling or interacting-birth to older
- No babbling-4 to 7 months
- Only a few signs, gestures-7-12 months
- Misunderstanding of others-7mths-2yrs
- Says only a few words-12-18mths
- Misunderstanding easy words-18mths-2yrs
- Does not make complete sentences-1.5-3yrs
- Difficulty playing and communicating with peers-2-3yrs
- Early Writing/Reading skills-2.5-3yrs
IN ADULTS
- Struggles and or repetitive saying words/sounds(stuttering)
- Says words in the short, fragmented and or wrong order
(expressive aphasia) - Struggles to use words and understand others(global aphasia)
- Struggles with speech sound imitations(apraxia)
- Errors inconsistently and or slow rate of speech(apraxia)
- Slurred and or to slow or to fast rate of speech like mumbling(dysarthria)
