One of the most disheartening huddle of parenthood is getting an Overtired Baby to settle down and go to sleep. This is because the more you try to convince and soothe the baby, the more they get irritable and they can’t help it at all.
An overtired baby has a highly activated stress response system. What’s more, adrenaline and cortisol production is triggered. These stress hormones flood their tiny bodies and they end-up distorting the body’s sleep-wake cycle. These elevated hormones rip off sleep from the baby and they find it very difficult to stay asleep resulting in a vicious cycle of tiredness. An overtired toddler exhibits non-specific signs such as yawning, irritability, catnaps and sometimes over-activity.
An overtired baby can be helped by swaddling, using a pacifier, holding your baby close to the chest and darkening the baby’s room to reduce stimulation. All these may help soothe an overtired baby to rest.
