Before you can help someone with an alcohol problem to get sober you’ll need to learn all you can about the condition. An alcohol disorder can range from a mild case to severe addiction where a person has a physical as well as psychological dependency on the drug. When helping alcoholics get sober it is important to remember that each case is individual, just like the people that are suffering from the disorder.
If you believe that a friend or loved one is, or is in danger of becoming, an alcoholic you first need to approach them to discuss your concerns. You’ll need to be supportive as possible while recognizing that you can’t force someone to change or seek treatment until they decide to do so. All you can do is express your concerns and offer your help in a non-judgmental and empathetic way. You can urge them to seek help through a treatment program but until they are ready to do so you can only offer the option without insisting that they do so.
