DHT Blocker supplements are usually taken to restore hair growth and reduce male pattern baldness. In women, DHT is thought to be a cause of hair loss as well, but rapidly growing evidence suggests that the main factor behind female-pattern hair loss is dihydrotestosterone beta (DHT beta), a metabolite of testosterone, and not free testosterone. In men, dihydrotestosterone is made from the conversion of testosterone by the enzyme five alpha reductase. DHT has a higher affinity for receptors in facial hair follicles than does testosterone, which causes them to shrink over time and eventually stop producing new hairs. By blocking these male hormones at their receptor sites, DHT blockers can restore shrunken hair follicles and allow new facial hairs to grow. These products are also used by people who have excess hair growth, again for blocking the hormone which causes this condition.
