Many people hope that someday, blind contact lenses will be available to restore vision for millions of people worldwide. Blindness is a debilitating condition that can lead to depression, anxiety, and social isolation.
Although vision impairing conditions like near-sightedness have contact lenses to correct vision, nothing exists yet for those who are completely blind. Researchers are studying ways to approach the problem from various angles, ranging from the use of electronic stimulation to implants that mimic retinal processes.
One technique involves using tiny electrodes to stimulate the remaining cells in the eye and create a visual representation in the brain. While not a cure, it could help people see shapes and images more clear than they currently can, and improve quality of life.
Another approach involves using a camera to interpret visual data, which gets wirelessly transmitted to the lens. The lens then processes the data and sends electrical impulses to the brain, enabling the person to “see” the surrounding environment.
While these technologies offer hope for the future, much work remains. More research is necessary to create a safe, effective, and affordable option for those with blindness.
Blind contact lenses are not yet available, but new technologies bring hope for a future with more sight for those who need it the most.
