The Marquise diamond cut was fashioned to imitate the pursed lips of Jean Antoinette Poisson, the Marchioness Madame de Pompadour, the mistress of the French king, Louis XV. He reigned in the years 1710 to 1774.
Marquise diamonds are cut in such a manner as to make the wearer’s finger seem slenderer and longer. Even though it may have fewer carats than a round cut, it looks larger. So, if you’re on a budget, this diamond may be the wiser purchase. It tends to be a better value compared to the other cuts.
The Marquise also is referred to as Navette because it resembles a ship in shape. Navette means ‘little ship’ in French. Marquise is also the rank just “duke” and just above “count” in royal ranking.
