Adult ADHD Doctor: ADHD is a disorder that can affect adults as well as children. Adult ADHD typically involves difficulty focusing on tasks for an extended period of time, hyperactivity or restlessness, and impulsiveness. It usually takes a while to be correctly diagnosed because many other conditions could mimic this type of behavior, such as anxiety disorders, depression, or bipolar disorder.
Symptoms of Adult ADHD may be different from those in children with ADD/ADHD. Adults who have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHA often find their symptoms to be more internalized than externalized, such as feeling nervous or hyperactive. This can make it difficult for adults to realize they need help because there aren’t any apparent signs of struggling behavior as there would be in a child.
The condition is hereditary, so if your parents had ADD or Adult ADHD, there’s a good chance you will too. The signs of Adult ADHD in children can be even harder to spot than those seen in adults. The child may not have the exact coping mechanisms that an adult would use to control their symptoms and behaviors.
