Living with high functioning anxiety disorder can be tough. Even though it might not seem obvious to those around you, dealing with anxiety can be a daily battle. This type of anxiety disorder is not commonly recognized, even though it affects many people.
High functioning anxiety describes people who appear to have everything together, and who seem to excel in every area of their lives. But internally, they are struggling just to keep up. They constantly worry about the future, ruminate on past mistakes, and worry about the opinions of others. They also tend to overthink, over-prepare and over-analyse.
It’s not just a matter of “calming down” or “taking a break”. People with high functioning anxiety disorder can find it difficult to relax and switch off the constant chatter in their minds. The good news, however, is that there are ways to manage this type of anxiety.
For starters, it can be helpful to talk to someone about what you are experiencing, whether it’s a trusted friend, family member or counselor. There are also many resources available that can help with identifying and managing these feelings. This might include developing coping mechanisms for overwhelm and anxiety, practicing mindfulness, or seeking medical treatment.
If you or someone you know might be suffering from high functioning anxiety disorder, remember that you don’t have to face it alone. There is help available and support is out there.
